History of Bollywood: How did it start? In 1922, two brothers named Anil and Venkataraman started a movie company named Anand-Mar Pictures. The company made a few films before it folded in 1923. However, the brothers keep their ideas for movies alive and entrepreneur P. V. Sindhu founded the Indian National Film Company in 1934 to produce Indian films without any financial help from Anand-Mar Pictures. Sindhu’s company soon became successful and produced some of India’s most renowned films including Padmaavat (1939), Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (1940), Prem Ratna Zindagi (1951) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1993).
